IPS細胞是由一些多能遺傳基因導入皮膚等細胞中制造而成。讓普通體細胞“初始化”，使其具備干細胞功能，這就是“iPS細胞”。“iPS細胞”具有和胚胎干細胞類似的功能.不需要制造胚胎，就可以從任何組織的細胞，甚至皮膚組織的細胞，制造出具有干細胞功能的細胞，那么就不再有倫理問題了，而且簡單了不知多少倍。iPS細胞和ES細胞除了不能生成胚胎以外，可以產生所有的細胞，如果用于醫療，那么理論上可以治愈所有疾病——凡是不好的組織都去除，替換為重新生長的正常組織。
